They normally focus on a certain topic to which people are given the liberty of voting and seeing results that will stand out after a periodic poll. They do not have to be too technical. Simple polling and vote casting are enough to change the attention on your site in a jiffy. But make sure though that you have topics worth voting for. If not, no one will even bother to notice it.
